🌄 Hidden Hiking Gems of Northern Utah You Need to Explore

🌄 Hidden Hiking Gems of Northern Utah You Need to Explore

by Jessica Knowles | Oct 30, 2025 | Utah Living

When people think of Utah hiking, they picture Zion, Moab, or crowded canyon overlooks. But those of us who call northern Utah home know the real gems are the trails where you can hear the birds, smell the pines, and actually find parking on a Saturday. 😅

Here are the local-loved hikes in Salt Lake, Utah, Davis, and Tooele Counties — close enough for a quick weekend adventure, but far enough off the radar to enjoy some peaceful solitude.

🏔️ Salt Lake County Hidden Gems

Grandeur Peak — Millcreek Canyon

📍 Church Fork Trailhead, Millcreek Canyon
🥾 6 miles round trip — Moderate to Hard — 2,300+ ft elevation
⏱️ 3–5 hours round trip
🚘 ~20 minutes from Downtown Salt Lake City
💳 Millcreek Canyon day-use fee required

This steep but scenic trail winds through shady forest and opens into massive 360° views of Salt Lake Valley and the surrounding Wasatch peaks. Perfect sunrise spot — the city glows.

✨ Pro Tip: The saddle below the summit makes a great snack break and selfie location.

⛰️ Utah County Hidden Gem (Close to SLC Area)

Battle Creek Falls — Pleasant Grove

📍 Kiwanis Park – 1100 E Canyon Rd, Pleasant Grove
🥾 1.7 miles round trip — Easy — Waterfall access
🚘 ~30 minutes from Draper
👨‍👩‍👧 Kid + beginner friendly

A short canyon hike that leads to a cool, misty waterfall surrounded by smooth rock walls. Great for mornings, school nights, and breaking in new hikers.

💦 Best Season: Spring for peak water flow.

✨ Davis County Favorites

Bountiful Ridge Trail

📍 Skyline Drive – Bountiful B Trail Access
🥾 Choose your length: 4–15 miles — Moderate terrain
🌅 Unbeatable sunset views over the Great Salt Lake
🌸 Wildflowers May–June

This ridge walk feels like you’re floating above the valley. Breezy, quiet, and full of panoramic photo spots.

🦅 Keep watch: Falcons & antelope are often seen below.

Legacy Parkway Trail — Farmington/Kaysville

🚶‍♀️ Easy, paved — perfect for strollers + bikes
🌿 Wetlands + meadows + mountain views
📍 Multiple access points near Hwy-89 & Station Park

This peaceful path is ideal for family adventures and new hikers who want a taste of nature without committing to rocks and switchbacks.

🍦 Post-hike treat: Ice cream at Station Park!

🏜️ Tooele County Hidden & Underrated

Deseret Peak — Stansbury Mountains

📍 South Willow Canyon Rd, Grantsville
🥾 7.5 miles round trip — Hard — 11,031 ft elevation
🚘 45–60 minutes from West Valley / SLC

One of the best summits in Utah — and most people haven’t even heard of it. Alpine meadows, wildflowers, and insane desert-meets-mountain views.

🌤️ Best Season: June–October

Stansbury Island Loop

📍 Off I-80 — Stansbury Island Rd
🥾 5–7 miles — Moderate
🌅 Mirror-like lake views & red rock formations
📸 Photographers adore this place

Rocky trails, quiet air, and stunning sunsets. A total “where have I been all my life?” hike.
