Salt Lake County Landmarks & The Stories Behind Them

Salt Lake County Landmarks & The Stories Behind Them

by Jessica Knowles | Dec 2, 2025 | Salt Lake County Living

Salt Lake County blends modern city life with deep western heritage. From pioneer footsteps to government milestones to artistic oddities — every landmark has a story to tell.

Here are some must-visit spots that bring Utah’s history to life:

✨ Temple Square — Heart of Salt Lake City

📍 50 N Temple St., Salt Lake City
⛪ Iconic Temple & Tabernacle
🎶 Famous for the Tabernacle Choir
🌟 Christmas lights display draws visitors from around the world

This 10-acre historic center marks where Mormon pioneers built their first gathering place after arriving in 1847. Even if you’re not LDS, the architecture, gardens, and free tours are beautiful and peaceful year-round.

Fun fact: The Salt Lake Temple took 40 years to build — granite hauled from Little Cottonwood Canyon!

🇺🇸 Utah State Capitol — The People’s House

📍 350 N State St., Salt Lake City
🕰️ Completed in 1916
🧱 Neoclassical architecture + Corinthian columns
📸 Best cherry blossoms in April 🌸

Standing tall above downtown, the Capitol showcases Utah’s political history through free public tours, artwork from local artists, and rotating exhibits featuring influential Utahns.

Don’t miss the City Overlook behind the building — amazing valley views!

🐴 This Is The Place Heritage Park

📍 2601 Sunnyside Ave., Salt Lake City
🎟️ Living pioneer village + interactive experiences
🎡 Family-friendly events all year
🧑‍🌾 Handcart pulling, blacksmith demos & village animals

Named after the famous declaration from Brigham Young — “This is the right place.” — this park celebrates Utah’s settlement story with fun activities for kids and a huge Pioneer Landmark Monument.

Great day trip for learning + laughter.

🌍 Natural History Museum of Utah (Bonus!)

📍 301 Wakara Way, University of Utah
🦴 Dinosaur exhibits + geology + Native cultures
🪨 Stunning building design inspired by canyon cliffs

Not technically a “landmark” in the pioneer sense — but a must for understanding Utah’s deep natural roots. And the rooftop views? 🤌 Perfect.

🤯 Hidden Gem: Gilgal Sculpture Garden

📍 749 E 500 S, Salt Lake City
🎨 Odd + fascinating outdoor art installations
🔍 Featuring religious + symbolic sculptures

Yes… one iconic sculpture includes a sphinx with Joseph Smith’s face.
It’s quirky. It’s weird. It’s unforgettable — AKA SLC culture.

Best explored at twilight for a slightly eerie experience 👀

🎖️ Military History: Fort Douglas

📍 32 Potter St., University of Utah campus
🏚️ Founded in 1862 during the Civil War
🎖️ Museum with original military structures, uniforms & tanks

U.S. Army history with a Utah twist — and rumored paranormal activity. Ghost tour, anyone? 👻

🧭 Plan Your Landmark Tour

Landmark  Best For  Location
Temple Square  Architecture + pioneer history  Downtown SLC
Utah State Capitol  Exhibits + cherry blossoms  Capitol Hill
This Is The Place  Family adventure  Foothills / Emigration Canyon
